Transrepublican Congressman Brian Mast (TR – FL D18)
Transrepublican Congressman Brian Mast (TR – FL D18)
Republished with permission by Author Keith Bessette, Stuart, FL (resident of Florida’s U.S. House District 18 – Mast’s district)
Misrepresentative Brian Mast (TR – FL) of Florida’s U.S. House District 18 can be referred to as a Transrepublican (TR) and a Misrepresentitive.
Transrepublican (TR): of, relating to, or being a person whose political identity in office is opposite the identity the person had or was identified as having at election
Misrepresentative: a person holding elected political office whose actions in office violate their sworn duty to represent the people by protecting the rights and liberty of a district’s citizens
Why is Mast a Transrepublican?
Brian Mast (TR-FL) is not actually a Republican by his actions in office in critical areas. Based on his statements, actions, and votes he has a politically left position commonly found in a Democrat in important policy areas. Congressman Mast publicly identifies as a “Republican”. Yet he acts in office in a manner that shows his true nature is a leftist Democrat. This inherent characteristic can be referred to as “Transrepublican” – a Democrat by political action who publicly identifies as a “Republican”.
Congressman Brian Mast (TR – FL) demands voters use the (R) “Republican” identification designation as if he is actually a Republican. Misrepresentative Mast has fooled many voters in the past with the Transrepublican tactic. But many voters can tell a true Republican from a Transrepublican when they are knowledgeable of a politician’s actions. It often requires paying attention to what an office holder does, rather than what he says on the campaign trail.
Many voters will not vote based solely on how a politician publicly identifies.
Example of Brian Mast’s anti-Republican actions
For example, while holding Congressional office publicly identifying as a Republican, Transrepublican Brian Mast has acted multiple times in opposition to the right to keep and bear arms. Misrepresentative Mast’s actions regarding firearms have been in direct violation of the Republican Party platform, AND in direct accordance with the Democrat Party platform.
Transrepublican Brian Mast has authored, promoted, sponsored, co-sponsored, and voted to infringe on the critically important citizen’s right to keep and bear arms.
This includes Mr. Mast’s authored and proposed Federal legislation to temporarily ban sales of common semi-automatic rifles in his first term in Congress. This is a step toward the permanent ban Mast has publicly called for . Presumably because he couldn’t or didn’t want to define what it is he wishes to take away from citizens, his legislation included ordering government development of a definition of so-called “assault rifles”.
Misrepresentative Mast’s 2018 bill was titled “MASS VIOLENCE PREVENTION REFORM ACT” . His chosen title is both a blatant lie and ludicrous. His title misrepresents what the bill would do. Banning sales of particular types of rifles to lawful gun owners cannot prevent mass violence. Perhaps Mast has not yet heard of the black market in firearms. Or 9/11 and the Oklahoma City bombing.
There is no need to use taxpayer money to define what Mast (TR) wishes to ban. I will provide the definition free of charge for use in Mast’s gun ban legislation. This is what Mast wishes to ban:
assault rifle (n):“A black semi-automatic rifle visually appearing similar to rifles used by the military and as Hollywood movie props, which often result in fear by those with no knowledge of firearms.”
Transrepublican Mast also worked to enact additional legislation to infringe on the right to keep and bear arms in his second term. Brian Mast co-sponsored and voted for legislation to ban direct private transfer of firearms. The 2019 H.R.8 “Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019” requires federal involvement in private sales, banning private transfer without a federal background check . This bill had 232 co-sponsors, of which 226 were Democrat and 6 were Republican. A bill with 97% Democratic co-sponsors and 3% Republican is a Democrat bill by definition.
This bill’s title is also a lie, designed to willfully misrepresent it. We should not be fooled by false legislation titles. A bill with 3% Republican and 97% Democrat voting in favor is not sufficiently supported by both major Parties to be considered “bipartisan”. Transrepublican Brian Mast is one of the very few so-called “Republicans” that gave Mast’s anti-gun rights partner House Speaker Nancy Pelosi the excuse to lie about the bill as being “bipartisan”.
Misrepresentitive Brian Mast votes with Democrats on gun right infringements. 2019 H.R. 8 passed the House with 232 “yeas”, and only 2 “nays” by Democrats. It had 8 “yeas” and 188 “nays” in Republican votes. A bill that has 96% of the Republicans voting against and 99% of the Democrats voting in favor of is a Democrat bill. Mast voted with 99% of the Democrats, and against 96% of the Republicans on this anti-gun rights legislation. Again, declaring himself a Transrepublican by his actions showing his true political nature.
Brian Mast has also called for increasing the minimum age requirements for “various categories of firearms”, and banning sales of “accessories and add-ons that circumvent the ban on automatic firearms”. Both of these policies violate the 2nd Amendment. If a person is legally old enough to join the military and fly a fighter jet, join the Police force, and buy a house, he is old enough to buy a firearm to protect his family; any firearm. Does Mast also wish to establish a maximum age to own “various categories of firearms”? It is the same thing.
Mast’s efforts to infringe on the right to keep and bear arms are in direct violation of the rights specifically recognized by the 2nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and the Republican Party platform.
These actions by a Congressman are the actions of an anti-gun Democrat. Knowledgeable voters are not fooled by Transrepublican Brian Mast’s public identification as a so-called “Republican”. He is NOT a Republican on the topic of firearms. His actions violate specific provisions of the Republican Party platform. Rather, his actions in office match specific provisions of the anti-gun rights Democrat Party platform. Mr. Mast’s identifying as a “Republican” is a trick to fool voters not familiar with his work in office and his policy goals. Brian Mast is a Transrepublican by his record in office.
Mast’s support of the Democrat Platform and opposition to the Republican Platform
Misrepresentitive Brian Mast’s actions in Congress have directly violated the Republican Party platform on the critical issue of firearm rights. The Republican Party Platform says “We oppose ill-conceived laws that would restrict magazine capacity or ban the sale of the most popular and common modern rifle. We also oppose any effort to deprive individuals of their right to keep and bear arms without due process of law.”
Transrepublican Mast’s actions in Congress have directly supported the Democrat Party platform on the critical issue of firearm rights. The Democrat Party Platform says “we will expand and strengthen background checks and close dangerous loopholes in our current laws; repeal the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA) to revoke the dangerous legal immunity protections gun makers and sellers now enjoy; and keep weapons of war—such as assault weapons and large capacity ammunition magazines (LCAM’s)—off our streets.”
Misrepresentative Brian Mast’s (TR – FL) actions in office regarding the right to keep and bear arms supports specific provisions of the anti-gun rights Democrat platform. Mast’s actions violate specific provisions of the pro-gun rights Republican platform.
Brian Mast’s actions are in direct violation of U.S. Constitution
The U.S. Constitution’s 2nd Amendment says “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed”.
The Founders were quite serious when writing these words. “Shall not” allows no exceptions for particular types of firearms. “Arms” includes the rifles Mast is working to ban. The Militia is all the people – other than those in government. “Regulated” means well trained, not legislation. Changing the definition of the Founder’s words is NOT an argument. Congress has no authority to ban so-called “assault rifles”. Mast’s gun ban bill is unconstitutional.
“Arms” as the Founder’s used the term includes the common semi-automatic rifles Brian Mast is working to ban. Blackstone’s Law Dictionary provides their definition – the one we must use today.
Arms:“Anything that a man wears for his defense, or takes in his hands, or uses in his anger, to cast at or strike at another. … This term, as it Is used in the constitution, relative to the right of citizens to bear arms, refers to the arms of a militiaman or soldier, and the word is used in its military sense.”
Congress has no lawful authority to ban sales of so-called “assault rifles” for two reasons.
No such authority is expressly delegated in the U.S. Constitution Article 1, therefore Congress is not authorized to enact Mast’s proposed anti-gun rights legislation.
The 2nd Amendment specifically denies Congress authority to enact Mast’s proposed firearm ban legislation.
The Founder’s words and intent on firearms is quite clear. Congress cannot lawfully do what Transrepublican Brian Mast is working to do. His efforts in office will unconstitutionally infringe on a critically important right.
The Republican Party platform requires Republicans to avoid flexing the Founder’s words and intent. The Republican Party platform preamble states “We believe the Constitution was written not as a flexible document, but as our enduring covenant.” Changing the definition of the Founder’s words is not a valid argument for Federal gun bans.
It is not acceptable to violate the U.S. Constitution, as Transrepublican Brian Mast has done in office repeatedly.
Misrepresentative Brian Mast, as a member of the House of Representatives, swore the oath “I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic”. Transrepublican Brian Mast has violated this oath in legislation he has authored, sponsored, co-sponsored, and voted for.
Brian Mast (TR – FL) has violated the Constitution. This is grounds for removal from office.
